Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK is one of the most successful IPL franchises with five titles under their belt since 2008 when they entered.
Captained by MS Dhoni and coached by Stephen Fleming, these Chennai-based Super Kings have made 10 finals and 12 playoff appearances during their decade-long IPL history – more than any side – while also possessing the highest winning percentage among franchises in IPL history.
Success lies at the foundation of India’s success: their scouting network has unearthed notable players like Jasprit Bumrah and Harbhajan Singh.
Furthermore, their home ground of MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk) features slow and turning pitches which penalise power-hitting batsmen while rewarding those capable of building innings slowly over time.
Last season, the Super Kings struggled to find their footing in the UAE league, finishing second from bottom and failing to make it into the knockout stages. However, they rebounded quickly by winning five titles consecutively beginning with 2023’s campaign.
This year, they’re off to an impressive start, winning three out of their first four matches and recording some impressive wins over their competitors.
Although not as powerful as some rivals in terms of power hitting, they possess many quality pitchers who know how to grind out victories over time.
CSK were hindered in their first half season progress by injuries, yet were able to make strides when Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja returned from suspension.
Furthermore, CSK re-signed spinner Noor Ahmad to add yet more spin to its bowling attack along with Jadeja, Kedar Jadhav and Noor Ahmad.
The Super Kings boast an extremely consistent batting unit, led by Faf du Plessis and Dhoni. However, their bowling has fallen below previous expectations since Deepak Chahar and Adam Milne no longer receive regular playing time. Still, Dhoni remains their greatest strength both with bat and field.
Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR are an Indian Premier League cricket team based out of Kolkata and compete in one of ten teams competing in India’s premier Twenty20 competition, known as the Indian Premier League.
Established in 2006 and owned by West Bengal state government, their home matches take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, India.
In its inaugural season, KKR finished fourth in the tournament. Although their early seasons were marked by struggles and defeat, Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa’s arrival as new signings enabled them to win their inaugural championship in 2012. Unfortunately they could not successfully defend it and were released prior to the 2018 auction.
Even without several of their marquee players, KKR were still formidable opponents in 2024. Led by Dinesh Karthik in his inaugural year as captain, they made the playoffs once again before being defeated by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the semi-finals. 2024 proved their most successful season since their return to playoff contention in 2012: winning seven home matches outright while only losing three times and scoring 300+ runs five times!
The team was strengthened with the return of West Indian spinner Sunil Narine and South African fast bowler Marchant de Lange; domestic players such as batsmen Debabrata Das and Iresh Saxena as well as fast bowler Chirag Jani were also signed.
Although Russell, Lynn and Uthappa were key components for KKR in terms of their batting performances, lesser-known players made an impactful statement as well.
Varun Chakravarthy was particularly notable, taking an astounding 50 wickets during the season and leading wicket taker overall. Nitish Rana also proved himself valuable while Rinku Singh’s powerplay dominance stood out among all others for this side.
KKR’s bowling performance was also outstanding, led by Morne Morkel, Umesh Yadav and Piyush Chawla who all contributed significantly. Chawla even scored the fastest 50 in IPL history against Delhi Daredevils!

Eden Gardens was host to several international matches during 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup final as well as six matches during 2011 Cricket World Cup tournament.
KKR are known for having an impressive lineup, yet some key players are missing from this matchup. Kolkata will look to make an effective start but may struggle if their batsmen cannot score runs quickly enough.
Harshit Rana opens up for KKR with an over, which Moeen Ali immediately exploited to score four runs off it. Moeen hit two boundaries off consecutive deliveries; hitting one over midwicket before striking one for four more boundaries off Harshit Rana himself. Moeen has shown flashes of form against CSK fast bowlers but must maintain his performance to stay on top.
Even after injury scares, CSK remain strong favorites to win this match against KKR; their track record against them speaks volumes. As reigning champions, they have won all three previous meetings between these teams and will look to retain their title for an eighth time this time around.
Their last encounter produced an exciting high-scoring contest with Sunil Narine playing an outstanding innings with both bat and ball to help Kolkata chase down their target with 10 overs remaining due to his efforts.

KKR’s poor form in this year’s IPL has doomed their playoff aspirations. Currently ranked fourth with just 11 points to their name, they will need a victory against CSK on Friday to kickstart their hunt for top four position.
After an inauspicious start to their campaign, KKR have found their footing in the league. In their inaugural meeting with CSK at Eden Gardens, they emerged victorious thanks to Virat Kohli’s heroic 83 not out in 20 overs; following that total up, Andre Russell led them towards their target with relative ease as did Rinku Singh and Ramandeep Singh late surges.
CSK sent KKR into bat at home, where Phil Salt and Andre Russell made inroads into their total with aggressive hitting before being separated by Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling. Ultimately, Phil Salt shared an outstanding 74-run partnership before eventually being separated by Kuldeep Yadav’s bowling.
Without Chris Lynn in their lineup, KKR struggled against CSK’s spinners such as Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav, but Urvil Patel and Brevis Malik showed signs of promise – this will certainly bode well for their squad next season.
