Cricket

India’s Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja put on a record fifth wicket stand of 206 runs on Day 2 of the Test match at Ahmedabad to put themselves into an excellent position on Day 3. Here are the highlights.

Hope was caught off guard when his back foot attempted to move forward as he attempted to cut, as the ball took an unintended bounce and hit him square on his helmet, leaving him with an apparent shoulder injury and walking away in tears, according to the latest India National Cricket Team vs West Indies Cricket Team match scorecard.

Day 1

India’s young captain Shubman Gill will have an opportunity to establish himself within his team when he leads India against West Indies for the first time ever in Test cricket.

It has been seven years since West Indies last visited and World Championship points will be at stake during this two-match contest.

The visitors struggled against a disciplined bowling display from the home team on Day One, with seamers dominating play.

Jasprit Bumrah caught Brandon King with an accurate short delivery that hit him square on his pads when trying to defend a back-foot drive, before it hit his middle stump instead and sent his balance flying as it hit it square up against him.

Later Alick Athanaze reached for fuller deliveries but missed their target line, and fell victim to one which hit his body instead, giving up 13 runs from 24 balls as the visitors fell to five down after only 24 balls were faced on opening day one of play.

Ravindra Jadeja then struck with his left-arm spinner to dismiss Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 42. This pair’s dismissal provided Ravindra Jadeja with another opportunity to build on his already stellar allround credentials; providing another boost for his reputation.

Khary Pierre responds quickly and strikes four runs off an over that drifted into his off stump’s footmarks; taking full advantage of India reaching 121/2 at half way in day one at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The visitors struggled to build partnerships against India’s relentless attack, and Captain Roston Chase fell to Kuldeep Yadav for 62. Kuldeep Yadav managed to get an edge which wasn’t captured cleanly by wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel; India took full advantage of this review opportunity and took full control.

Axar Patel then caught Shai Hope at midwicket while the batter was leaning forward to defend. Unfortunately for Hope, however, his bat slipped too far forward, getting hit by an edge and falling for 59 despite having survived an earlier dropped chance.

India quickly secured victory after three days as they amassed 448/5 in their first innings at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, declaring at the end of their first innings and declaring.

It was a crushing blow for their visitors, who struggled against an impressive attack featuring Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj Ravindra Jadeja Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav.

Day 2

Rohit Sharma’s exit has signaled the birth of a new-look India team, with Shubman Gill taking over as Test captain and Dhruv Jurel replacing him behind the stumps.

Ravindra Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel formed an outstanding partnership which has seen their side build an early lead before lunch.

West Indies delayed using their second new ball until 17 overs into their innings; but this decision ultimately backfired as Jadeja and Jurel continued their dominance over their opponents.

After an initially slow start, Jadeja and Jurel are quickly building upon India’s lead of 266 runs to extend it further. After just 13 overs together they reached 100 runs partnership – Jadeja celebrating his fifty with a sword gesture! Both batsmen look in fine form.

Windies were dealt a devastating blow when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Alick Athanaze with an incredible diving catch from Nitish Kumar Reddy at square leg off Jasprit Bumrah’s short delivery outside off. Athanaze attempted to pull but misfired, eventually being caught at square leg by Nitish Kumar Reddy with an amazing diving catch.

Athanaze was not helped by the pitch, which appeared to play fairly true and offered little assistance for batters. Athanaze wasn’t alone in struggling against India’s quality attack either – all established players struggled similarly without making much impactful contributions to the scorecard.

West Indies top order was dismantled by India’s new ball duo of Siraj and Bumrah. Tagenarine Chanderpaul was out early after mistiming an attempt at hitting off Siraj nicking off to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel; John Campbell also fell cheaply after mistiming an off Bumrah delivery which went to midwicket.

Roston Chase managed a relatively respectable score, reaching eight before being stumped off Jadeja by Sai Sudharsan off Jadeja and stumped off Jadeja at Jadeja’s bowling attack. By day two’s end, home side declared their first innings to have amassed 448-5, taking control of their game.

KL Rahul and Dhruv Jurel earlier made centuries to help India take an early lead and seem poised for an impressive victory, the first time India have done so since 1994, when a series draw occurred between them.

Day 3

KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Ravindra Jadeja all scored centuries as India dominated West Indies on Day Three of the opening Test at Ahmedabad. India declared their first innings at 448-5 at night – giving themselves a lead of 286 runs and making use of any possible assistance on an early start track.

Rahul and Shubman Gill came together after an initial poor start and managed to form an impressive 104-run partnership, during which Rahul scored his maiden home century while receiving outstanding support from Shubman Gill.

Although there were several close calls with edges failing to find fielders, the pair managed to find boundaries consistently throughout.

Windies batsmen struggled against India’s aggressive bowling attack led by Mohammed Siraj. Their top order collapsed quickly with Nitish Kumar Reddy taking an impressive catch at square leg to dismiss Tagenarine Chanderpaul for 14.

Washington Sundar strikes again, as Washington Sundar removes Alick Athanaze with another big wicket fall. Sundar fired one short outside off at 135 kph and Athanaze mistimed his shot into the leg-side region – but Sundar was there at the non-striker’s end to catch the ball brilliantly with one quick dive from behind his wicket!

Just before tea, Jadeja dismissed Jomel Warrican for a duck and Yadav dismissed Justin Greaves despite Alick Athanaze (28 off 87 balls) making an attempt at recovery.

The second session began relatively quietly as Athanaze and Greaves successfully navigated early exchanges before Jadeja and Yadav unleashed their old ball to stun West Indies into submission.

Athanaze was caught by Siraj at short leg while Greaves fell lbw to Yadav but they managed to hold off defeat as Athanaze was caught at short leg and Greaves fell lbw to Yadav before adding 56 off 87 balls for sixth wicket partnership before West Indies eventually collapsed into defeat;

West Indies ended up scoring only 198-9 before finally conceding defeat with their hopes of salvaging match gone forever.

Final Score

On Day One of this Test match, India revealed its unrivaled dominance at home. A superb Indian bowling attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar had their way with Windies’ innings until all out was reached – 388 all out to be exact!

Any team would find it challenging to bat against such bowling in an international series like this. When missing key batsmen such as John Campbell and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, it becomes even harder. That explains why Windies top order appeared so ill-prepared in Ahmedabad; and was accordingly punished.

KL Rahul overcame an early scare when he edged one to the keeper, to produce an excellent innings that saw him complete his home century drought with an assured hundred off 197 balls. Shubman Gill also contributed, scoring 98 balls before being bowled by Ravindra Jadeja.

But the day was all about Jadeja, who continued his rise as one of cricket’s finest allrounders with four wickets at 104 without loss and an unbeaten 104 score to help India easily complete a 5-0 series win.

West Indies were bowled out for just 286 in reply and any hopes they had of making a contest of it were dashed when Yashasvi Jaiswal was trapped by Jayden Seales in front. Shai Hope attempted a comeback before misreading an overpitched delivery from Jadeja and being caught at deep square leg, thus ending a demoralising day for Windies cricket which they will try to put right during the second Test at Mumbai.
